CALWER PASSAGE

A Vibrant Façade for a Better Urban Climate

FRANKOSIL® 1K PLUS SEALS THE IRRIGATION CHANNELS

Construction projects in the era of climate change demand creativity and new ideas. The goal for the façade design of Calwer Passage in Stuttgart was to create a living, green space in the heart of the city. To ensure that every drop of water used in the irrigation system benefits the vegetation, the applicators chose the non-hazardous and certified low-emission liquid waterproofing FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus. To accelerate the construction process, the Turbo Shot accelerator was also used.

THE WATERPROOFING MATERIAL NEEDED TO BE SUSTAINABLE, ROOT-RESISTANT, AND HEAT-RESISTANT

To seal the irrigation system integrated into the façade, approximately 610 joints of the 2.70 m long aluminum channel elements had to be permanently connected. Several factors placed high demands on the waterproofing material. Aluminum is highly reactive to heat and cold, requiring the material to be extremely flexible and resistant to both frost and heat. Given the direct contact with plants, ecological safety was also essential. Another challenge was resistance to the water-fertilizer mixture used for irrigation.

“Silane-modified polyurethanes (SMPs) represent the latest technology. We’ve worked with these liquid plastics for years. They’re easy to apply and offer maximum safety for applicators. Thanks to their excellent material ecology, they provide maximum protection for both people and the environment.”

SAFE AND FREE FROM HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES

This eco-friendly waterproofing solution contains no hazardous substances such as solvents, isocyanates, or plasticizers, and is virtually odorless. The product has been tested for pollutants and comes with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). It is also recommended by the Sentinel Haus Institute and meets the criteria of the QNG – Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings.

Each channel was first cleaned with system cleaner TH610 and sanded with a grinding disc. After removing the dust, the treated sections were wiped down with primer PR130. After a flash-off time of around 15 minutes, a 10 cm wide strip was sanded on both sides of each joint, and the first layer of FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus with embedded fleece was applied. This was then topped with a second layer of liquid waterproofing. Three days later, a third application of FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus (approx. 200 g/m²) was applied. The fresh layer was broadcast with oven-dried quartz sand, and the excess was removed — eliminating the need for laborious surface preparation on-site.

To protect critical transitions from moisture, a metal sheet was placed over each treated joint and fixed in place with reinforced adhesive tape. This method created a permanently elastic connection between channel segments that could accommodate the thermal expansion of the aluminum.
FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus bridges cracks up to 2 mm, easily handling such movements. Each pair of channel elements was then sealed with a layer of liquid waterproofing, embedded fleece, and a second layer of waterproofing.

Outdoor work is always a challenge for waterproofing professionals: strong sunlight, wind, rain, and cold all influence the properties of construction materials — including working time, overcoatability, and load-bearing capacity.
To avoid delays caused by poor weather, the FRANKOSIL Turbo Shot accelerator was mixed into the FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus, enabling the sealed surface to be fully load-bearing after just 1.5 hours. Using Turbo Shot is incredibly easy: shake the bottle, mix it into the base component, and apply. It makes even unstable weather days manageable on-site.

“A building with a green façade of this scale is a market we have now specialized in. We look forward to shaping more façade projects of this kind in the future. Thanks to the high-performance products, intensive collaboration, and outstanding support from FRANKEN SYSTEMS, we felt well-equipped to meet the challenges of this project at every step.”
