WELEDA LOGISTICS CAMPUS

A Beacon of Sustainability

FRANKOSIL® 1K PLUS SEALS THE WELEDA LOGISTICS CAMPUS

The new Weleda Logistics Campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd sets new standards for ecological construction. Designed in harmony with people and nature, the new building imposes the highest demands on the construction materials used. The solvent-free and non-hazardous FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus from FRANKEN SYSTEMS protects the base areas of the building from moisture. The project has been awarded the DGNB Platinum certificate, the highest level of sustainability certification.

Project data: Logistics building with approx. 8,300 m² of floor space
Location: Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany
Product used: FRANKOSIL 1K Plus, Turbo Shot
Application area: Base sections
Planner: MICHELGROUP GmbH, Ulm
Applicator: Firma Müller Dach + Solar

THE CRUCIAL FACTOR IN CHOOSING THE WATERPROOFING SYSTEM: THE EXTREMELY LOW SD VALUE

For its 8,300 m² logistics center, Weleda was looking for a low-emission and durable waterproofing solution that would meet the stringent requirements of DGNB certification. The goal was to protect the base sections from water ingress while also ensuring that moisture would not be trapped within the building structure. “It quickly became clear that only FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus could meet these specifications. This state-of-the-art, silane-modified polyurethane liquid waterproofing from FRANKEN SYSTEMS carries the highest EMICODE® certification, EC1PLUS, and offers maximum safety for applicators as it is completely free from hazard labels,” explains DDM Jürgen Haese of Müller Dach + Solar, the company responsible for the base joint installations.

“With an Sd-value of 1.81 m at a 2.1 mm layer thickness, FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus is the most vapour-permeable DIN-compliant waterproofing on the market. Its water vapour diffusion resistance is approximately μ 864,” says Thomas David, Field Service Representative at FRANKEN SYSTEMS.

“A low Sd-value means that residual moisture can escape from the sealed material in the form of water vapour.”

BASE AREA WATERPROOFING

At the Weleda Campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd, a center for national and international distribution logistics was built, including production logistics areas. The new facility includes an administrative building, a connecting wing with a break room, a functional building for incoming and outgoing goods, and a high-bay warehouse with wooden shelving systems. The building's open glass façade is fronted by a wooden post structure, creating a visual link between the architecture and nature while shielding it from direct sunlight. The wooden steles are connected to a concrete base via a steel beam. The transition between the bitumen-clad concrete base and the steles had to be completely sealed due to perforations in the material. The floor-to-wall transitions also required waterproofing with FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus.

Before applying the FRANKEN SYSTEMS waterproofing, the professionals from Müller Dach + Solar cleaned the dry bitumen substrate thoroughly, removing any loose or adhering dirt. This prevents material entrapments and provides the ideal base for the first layer of liquid waterproofing. FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus was applied without primer, allowing for a fast and efficient construction process. Another advantage for applicators was the product’s ease of use: it can be stirred with a mixing stick or basket mixer. “The 1-component formula makes FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus easy and safe to use and minimizes application errors as no complex mixing is required,” says Thomas David.

Next, the applicators rolled on the first layer in Telegray using a nylon roller. While the layer was still wet, they embedded a layer of polyester fleece—wrinkle-free and bubble-free—by pressing it in with a dry roller. To ensure a reliable seal, fleece strips were applied to the base area with an overlap of approx. five centimeters. Finally, the team secured the fleece with a second coat of liquid material. “The surface must appear fully saturated and glossy — only then is the fleece completely embedded and the seal perfect,” notes David. “The amount of material required depends on the substrate’s absorption capacity.” For approx. 600 m² of base surface, Müller Dach + Solar used around 2 tons of FRANKOSIL® 1K Plus.

Wheather as a challenge - Turbo Shot as the solution. One major challenge for the applicators was the weather: rain and moisture complicated the exterior work. To ensure a swift and safe installation process, the technical advisor recommended using FRANKOSIL® Turbo Shot. By adding this small bottle to the liquid waterproofing, the coated surface cured in about one hour and could be immediately overcoated. Construction manager Jürgen Haese and his team were thrilled by how quickly the 1-component system could be applied. “The system is easy to work with, saves time, and ensures safety — even in unpredictable weather conditions,” Haese concluded. At the same time, the waterproofing remains odourless, free from any hazardous substances, and thus protects the health of the applicators.

“The Weleda Logistics Campus was an exciting and forward-looking project for us. We learned a lot about alternative building materials and are proud to have contributed to greater sustainability through FRANKEN SYSTEMS’ ecological waterproofing solutions.”
